Jillian Van Ells

Library Media Specialist

Library classes are held weekly for grades K-2, and the librarian works closely with teachers in grades 3-6 to support research, build information literacy and library skills, and promote literature appreciation. Special programming throughout the year nurtures a lifelong love of reading for all MCS students and builds community around reading. The library is open to students for book selection throughout the day and students are encouraged to read widely, deeply and often.

Happy Reading!

Highlights

In addition to classes, the MCS organizes a variety of fun and educational programs throughout the year.

“Poem in Your Pocket” Day: In celebration of National Poetry Month, students, faculty, and staff select a favorite or original poem to carry with them and share throughout the day.

Author Visits: Through generous community support, MCS brings in guest authors and illustrators to engage and inspire MCS students.

Vermont Student Choice Book Awards: Each year, K-3 students explore the 10 picture books nominated for the Red Clover Book Award. In the spring, students have a chance to campaign for their favorite before casting their vote. Students in grades 4-6 have an opportunity to independently read the Golden Dome Book Award nominees. Students who read at least five of the nominees are invited to cast their vote for their favorite.

Book Clubs: A variety of book club opportunities are offered throughout the year, including a graphic novel book club and a Battle of the Books book club.

Battle of the Books: Each spring, students in grades 4-6 are invited to participate in a team trivia competition based on books.
